Tonight New York will host the Costume Institute Gala at the city’s Metropolitan Museum of Art – the biggest and boldest event on the fashion fundraising calendar.

The most famous faces from fashion, film, music and art will turn out for the Met Gala and it’s sure to make headlines for the outfits on show.

This year the theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

It’s said to be the Met’s most controversial theme yet as fashion pieces are being placed next to artefacts from the Vatican in Rome.

There will be 40 Vatican robes and accessories on display, including Pope Benedict XV’s white silk cape embroidered with gold thread.

US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is at the helm of the event.

This year marks 70 years of the Met Gala and she has enlisted Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace as her co-chairs.

As we wait with bated breath to see what daring choices are made this year, here’s a look at some of the show-stopping looks from previous events.
