The U.S. Embassy said it is working with the government of The Bahamas to support improved regulation and oversight of local jet ski operations.

The statement comes as the U.S. Department of State updated its standard travel advisory regarding jet ski safety in The Bahamas.

The U.S. Department of State has continuously highlighted the lack of oversight in the industry.

In its advisory, the department reiterated that boating is not well regulated in The Bahamas, adding that injuries and deaths have occurred.

“Sexual assaults by jet ski operators have also been reported,” the advisory notes.

“Due to the risks, U.S. government employees are prohibited from using jet skis and personal watercraft rented from independent operators on New Providence and Paradise islands.

“Watercraft may not be safe, and some operators are not licensed or insured.”

The U.S. Embassy said the update “reflects ongoing efforts to address safety concerns and promote responsible recreational practices.”

It added: The embassy looks forward to receiving an update this week from The Bahamas’ task force dedicated to enhancing jet ski safety measures and remains committed to supporting these important implementation efforts in coordination with local authorities.”

In January 2016, following a report that an American had been sexually assaulted by a man operating a jet ski, the US Embassy issued a security message advising that its employees were prohibited from using jet skis. It also strongly advised U.S. citizens against patronizing jet ski services.
