Eid ul Fitr moonsightings are taking place this weekend across the world including in Saudi Arabia, the UK, Morocco, Pakistan and India.
Saudi Arabia was among the first to announce the date of Eid on Saturday, saying the crescent moon had been sighted, which brings Ramadan to an end. Eid ul Fitr will, therefore, start for Saudi citizens on Sunday, March 30.
Green Lane Masjid in Birmingham is also following this date for its huge public celebrations, which will take place in Small Heath Park on Sunday.
Across the globe, Eid will be either on Sunday or Monday. The split date is due to some starting Ramadan a day later than others as well as variations in the visibility of the crescent.
While some in the UK align themselves with Saudi Arabia, others including the UK Ahlus Sunnah Moonsighting Board, based in Birmingham, urge people to look for the moon locally and say the date to do so will be Sunday, March 30.

It followed earlier reports that the moon was not expected to be visible but Saudi officials would somehow manage to sight the crescent anyway.

Eid ul Fitr 2025 date announced in Oman

The United Arab Emirates has announced the date of Eid ul Fitr 2025. It will be Sunday, March 30.
The announcement came after the country's moonsighting committee met on the evening of Saturday, March 29 and said it had seen the crescent moon.
The sighting of the Shawwal crescent officially heralds the end of Ramadan and the start of Eid ul Fitr.
The UAE sent out several AI-powered drones from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory for the moonsighting, DubaiEye 103.8 reported.
Eid ul Fitr holidays for UAE will be from Sunday, March 30, to Tuesday, April 1.
Police issue anti-social behaviour warning for Eid ul Fitr festivities
Police say they "will not tolerate" anti-social behaviour or people who "cause misery" as communities prepare for Eid ul Fitr 2025.
In previous years, West Midlands Police received reports of anti-social behaviour, noise and nuisance in Birmingham, caused by vehicles being driven recklessly, blaring music and using their car horns into the early hours throughout Eid. As a result of that feedback, a police operation took place last year on the night before Eid.
The force said it was committed to ensuring the community can "celebrate safely with friends and family" for Chaand Raat and Eid ul Fitr and has promised to crack down on anti-social behaviour. This year, Birmingham City Council officially enforced a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for the Coventry Road area of the city.

Eid moon 'visible for just 8 minutes' in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia moonsighting officials say the skies are perfectly clear for sighting the Shawwal crescent and are taking their positions to begin observations. If the moon is seen, then Ramadan will end and it will be Eid ul Fitr 2025 on Sunday, March 30.
One local TV reporter said: "Many crescent observers expect the Shawwal Crescent to remain visible on the horizon for 7 to 8 minutes — a brief window to confirm its presence. Its sighting depends on the clarity of the skies."

Eid on the same day - could it happen?
No official announcements have yet been made about Eid ul Fitr 2025 in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan or other countries in the Middle East or Asia, but some believe "the entire Muslim world" will end up observing Eid on the same day this year.
That's on the basis of moon visibility information. But we've not yet had the official declarations.
Trinidad and Tobago declare Eid 2025 holidays
Eid ul Fitr 2025 holidays have apparently been declared in Trinidad and Tobago.
According to a post on X, the president issued a statement that Sunday, March 30, would be the holiday date for Eid ul Fitr 2025.
The following two days, March 31 and April 1, will also be public holidays, the first one for Eid and the second one for Shouter Baptist Liberation Day.
No mention was made of moonsightings, just the public holidays. Astronomical data indicates the moon won't be visible anywhere in the Caribbean today, so it's not clear what was the basis for the Eid decisions.
Watch out for impact of UK clock change on Ramadan and Eid this weekend
For anyone in the UK who will still be observing Ramadan on Sunday, March 30, remember the clocks change in the early hours of Sunday and will alter all the prayer and meal times.

Pakistan makes its Eid ul Fitr 2025 predictions
People in Pakistan will be looking for the Eid moon on Sunday and are expecting to observe Eid ul Fitr 2025 on Monday, March 31.
That's their 29th day of Ramadan, the time when moonsightings must be carried out. Pakistan began its Ramadan fasting on March 2, a day later than Saudi Arabia and some other countries.
The country's national space agency, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), says the new moon of Shawwal (the next month after Ramadan and the starting point for Eid) will be born at 3.58pm on March 29.
By sunset on March 30, when Pakistan moonsightings will take place, the moon will be 27 hours old so its first slim crescent should be visible.
SUPARCO says it therefore expects that Ramadan will run for 29 days this year in Pakistan, and Eid ul Fitr 2025 will be observed on March 31.
Nigeria to look for moon today as it announces two days of Eid holidays
People in Nigeria have been urged to look for the crescent moon today, March 29.
The country's leaders have also announced two days of public holidays for the celebrations.
The Federal Government of Nigeria declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays to mark the Eid ul Fitr celebrations.
Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has asked Muslims across the country to look for the crescent moon on Saturday, March 29.
A statement read: "March 29 marks the 29th day of Ramadan, making it the first possible day for moon sighting. The Sultan has urged anyone who sights the moon to report their observations through the designated phone numbers."
If the new moon is confirmed, it will herald the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the next month, Shawwal, which starts with the Eid festivities.
The Sultanate Council said it would make a final decision on Eid ul Fitr 2025 based on verified moon sightings.
Brunei announces it will observe Eid ul Fitr on Monday
The Asian country of Brunei has declared that Eid ul Fitr will be on Monday, March 31, based on forecasts of moon visibility.
The 29th day of the month of Ramadan, when moonsightings should take place, will be on Sunday for those in Brunei, a day later than in some other places such as Saudi Arabia.
Ahead of this, officials in Brunei - a tiny nation on the island of Borneo - have already officially confirmed that Eid will be Monday because the moon will be visible tomorrow to the naked eye.
We could be heading for another 'split Eid'
UK moonsighting group New Crescent Society reckons we may be heading for another 'split Eid' - meaning Eid ul Fitr is on two different dates, depending on location and which specific declarations you follow.
For some, Eid may be on Sunday, March 30; for others, it will be on Monday, March 31.
The New Crescent Society said: "It looks like we are heading into another split Eid this year, though we will know for sure this weekend. This year is very controversial, as the split is likely to be caused by an 'impossible' moonsighting in Saudi.
"These phantom moon sightings are almost annual occurrences and seem to align with their preprinted Umm al Qura calendar - a calendar which does not match lunar visibility."
Some to wait for moonsighting in Australia despite announcement
Although a national body announced the date of Eid in Australia, some will still wait for the moonsighting before making a decision.
Based on astronomical calculations, rather than an actual moonsighting, the Australian Fatwa Council predicted Eid would take place on Monday, March 31.
However, the Al-Tawhid Centre in Sydney says it will hold a moonsighting at sunset tonight.
If the crescent isn't seen on March 29, it will consult nearby countries, such as Indonesia, to see if they've glimpsed the moon, before making its decision.

UK guidance on Eid dates
Unlike other countries around the world, the United Kingdom has no government moonsighting committee to make announcements.
Many British moonsighting groups urge people to look for the crescent here in the UK.
If it's supposed to be visible but has been obscured by cloudy skies, they then turn to declarations from Britain's nearest Islamic neighbour, Morocco, whose time zone is aligned with the UK.
Alternatively, many people await the news from Saudi Arabia for guidance.
What is Eid ul Fitr?
Charity Islamic Relif describes Eid ul Fitr as a 'special occasion for Muslims and a time for celebration with family and loved ones'.
Eid ul-Fitr occurs at the end of the month of Ramadan each year.
Eid is one day but celebrations can last for up to three days in many Muslim countries.
The word Eid translates as “the festival of breaking the fast”, marking the end of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast from dawn until dusk.
