National Taiwan University (NTU) has established the country’s first International School of Politics and Economics, an English language degree program offering eight bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level degrees in political science and economics, finance, and leadership and management.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the NTU branch on Suzhou Road on Monday morning, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said that as Taiwan’s geopolitical importance increases, so does the need to cultivate scholars with international perspectives and expertise in political and economic changes. Tsai expressed her hope that alumni of the new program will become leaders in academia and industry not only in Taiwan but also globally. She stressed the importance of fostering such talent following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and other major upheavals.

University President Chen Wen-Chang (陳文章) echoed Tsai’s sentiment that the next generation of political, economic, and financial leaders must also understand new technologies, finance, and international relations. He noted that various NTU departments as well as business enterprises contributed their opinions to the creation of the new program, and that they have communicated with universities in Japan, France, and the United States regarding collaboration opportunities.
