The secrets from the set of the iconic Barbra Streisand film ‘The Way They Were’ are finally revealed in ‘The Way They Were: How Epic Battles and Bruised Egos Brought a Classic Hollywood Love Story to the Screen', which was released on January 24. Sharing details in the book, author Robert Hofler mentioned that Robert Redford wore two pairs of tight underpants during sex scenes with Streisand to protect himself from the actress who was attracted to him.

Redford originally didn't want to get involved with a woman he "didn't consider a serious actress" and wanted to "protect himself as he was a happily married father of four," according to DailyMail. He said at that time, "'Her reputation is as a very controlling person. She will direct herself. It'll never work." According to Hofler, Streisand wore a bikini for the sex scene in the film, which was shot between August and November 1972 and released in October 1973, but Redford doubled up on his underpants and made sure the scene was "pretty-G rated."

THE WAY YOU ARE: Why Robert Redford didn't want to work with Barbra Streisand in iconic 'The Way We Were'

He set strict boundaries and told Streisand, "If we're going to be able to work together you have to keep in mind that anything I tell you about myself will be volunteered because I want you to know it. Not because you think you have some kind of right to know it."

The romantic drama film, directed by Sydney Pollack, was nominated for several awards and won the Academy Awards for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song for the theme song 'The Way We Were.' In addition to this, it also ranked at number six on AFI's '100 Years...100 Passions' survey of the top 100 greatest love stories in American cinema, states Wikipedia.

Who is Robert Redford's wife?

Robert married Lola Van Wagenen, who dropped out of college to tie the knot with him, in 1958 at her grandmother's home. But ended up their marriage in 1985. He then married his second and present wife, and longtime partner Sibylle Szaggars, in July 2009 in Hamburg. According to YourTango, the pair first met in 1996. Born in April 1957, Szaggars is a painter, whose artwork was exhibited all throughout Europe, Monaco, Peru, Singapore, Japan, Suriname, and the United States, states The Sun. Robert gushed about marrying Szaggars, two years after the couple got married in a 2011 interview for AARP Magazine. He told the outlet, "She’s a very special person.
